Driving the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon: What to Expect
The Rubicon is a proper off-roader, and that shapes how it behaves on tarmac. The steering is slower and less precise than a regular SUV's, and the same hardware that makes it so capable off-road makes the ride bouncy over Chandigarh's speed breakers. In town the automatic helps and you sit high, but leave space behind when you park, because the tailgate swings open sideways with the spare wheel on it.
Cruise at 80 to 90 km/h and it stays reasonably quiet and gets nearer its listed 10 km/l; push harder, or crawl through city traffic, and both noise and fuel use climb. Four adults ride comfortably on longer runs, five on short ones. Off the tarmac it will go where our other cars can't, but it's still a rented car: go slowly and pick your line.

More than most cars we rent. It's listed at about 10 km/l, and city traffic or hill climbs bring that down. As a rough guide, a Kasauli day trip uses 12 to 15 litres and a Manali round trip closer to 70. Fill up in bigger towns on hill routes rather than counting on the next pump.
It's built for it, and broken hill roads, stony riverbeds and loose gravel are well within its ability. Drive within your own experience, though: damage from misuse or breach of our terms isn't covered by insurance, and racing, motorsport and competitive events are not allowed, off-road competitions included.
