Driving the Legender 4x4: What to Expect
This is a big, tall SUV, and four-wheel drive doesn't make it any smaller in town. The automatic handles Chandigarh's light points easily, but you'll want wide bays, and hotel driveways sometimes need a three-point turn. On the Kalka-Shimla highway the 2.8-litre diesel has plenty in hand for overtaking, and on snowy or slushy hairpins the four-wheel drive finds traction where a 2WD car would struggle.
Plan on about 12 km/l, less once you're climbing or creeping through snow. Five adults with luggage is the comfortable load on a long hill drive; the third row is best kept for kids or short hops. A tip for wedding drivers: go and see the venue entrance the day before, so you know where a car this size can turn, stop and park.

Yes, it's the car we'd suggest for that. A December function in Shimla, Kasauli or Narkanda can mean frost or snow on the last few kilometres to the resort, and four-wheel drive handles that while the Legender styling suits the day. Seven seats also let the immediate family arrive together.
When you're five or fewer and want the most refined, luxurious cabin we have, say for a couple's wedding car or a VIP guest. The Land Rover Defender seats five and runs on petrol. Stay with the Legender 4x4 when there are more than five of you, or when you'd rather run on diesel over a long trip. Both handle snow and rough roads well.
Probably not. For weddings in the Tricity, highway drives and summer hill trips, the Legender AT gives the same looks and seven seats, and on paper it's a little easier on fuel, about 14 km/l versus 12. Pick the 4x4 when the forecast or the route includes snow, slush or unpaved roads.
For an hour or two, yes; for the full climb to Manali, five or six adults is kinder. The middle row is roomy, while the rearmost bench is a squeeze for grown-ups over a long day and works best for children. With every seat filled, luggage room nearly disappears, so pack light.
