Weekend Drives for a Thar From Chandigarh
Kasauli (about 60 km)
The classic self drive Thar weekend. Leave by 8 am on Saturday to get through Parwanoo before the queue builds, turn off at Dharampur for the climb, and book two days so you aren't driving the bends back down in the dark.
Manali (about 300 km)
Manali and back is about 600 km, and each booked day includes 200 km, so three days is the minimum that covers the distance. Four or five days is more relaxed and leaves kilometres for Solang and Naggar. Pack soft bags.
Morni Hills (about 45 km)
A good half-day outing for two. The road up from Panchkula has tight hairpins, and the Thar's short length makes those turns easy. Go on a weekday morning if you can, as weekends bring more cars onto a road with little room to pass.
Driving a Thar Around the Tricity and in the Hills
Around Chandigarh, the Thar is shorter than it looks, so it slips into parking spaces in Sector 17 or at Elante more easily than our seven-seaters. The view behind is its weak point: the spare wheel on the tailgate and the small rear glass hide a lot, so reverse slowly and trust your mirrors. The ride is firm, and every speed breaker on the sector roads makes itself felt.
It cruises happily on the highway, with more wind noise than a regular SUV. Honestly, probably not. It sits high with a tall step up, the back seats are reached by squeezing past a front seat, and the firm ride gets tiring after a few hours. Parents will find the Toyota Innova HyCross AT much easier to get in and out of, and kinder over bumps.
With all four seats in use, plan on two soft bags or a few backpacks behind the rear seats; hard suitcases are a struggle. With just two of you, fold the rear seats and there's room for a week away. If four people need full-size luggage, a bigger car will save a lot of squeezing.
It'll do it, but about 250 km of highway each way doesn't play to the Thar's strengths. Wind noise, a firm ride and working the clutch in the traffic around Ambala add up over the day. For a Delhi run, the Mahindra XUV700 AT or Hyundai Creta AT will leave you fresher. Save the Thar for the hills, where it's most fun.
