Toyota Fortuner 4x4 AT on Rent in Chandigarh
Take a standard Fortuner, add four-wheel drive, and you have the Toyota Fortuner 4x4 AT: seven seats, an automatic gearbox and a 2.8-litre diesel. Snow at Solang or the Atal Tunnel, icy mornings around Kufri and Narkanda, slush after rain, a gravel track up to a homestay: those are the trips a Fortuner 4x4 on rent in Chandigarh is for. On such surfaces a two-wheel-drive SUV can lose grip and spin its wheels, while this one keeps pulling.
If your trip stays on tarred roads, which covers most summer drives into Himachal, four-wheel drive adds little, and the Toyota Fortuner AT is listed slightly better on mileage. If the car also has to impress, as at a snowbound hill-station wedding, the Legender 4x4 puts premium styling on the same four-wheel-drive setup. One honest note: four-wheel drive helps you climb and pull away on snow, but it does not help you stop on ice.

When a Self Drive Fortuner 4x4 Earns Its Keep
Solang and the Atal Tunnel in winter (Manali about 300 km)
Book at least 4 days: the Manali round trip alone is about 600 km, and the runs up to Solang and the tunnel add more. After fresh snowfall, police often let only four-wheel-drive vehicles beyond Solang, which is exactly when this car pays off.
Kufri and Narkanda snow (Shimla about 115 km)
Snowfall above Shimla leaves packed, icy roads around Kufri and further up at Narkanda. Leave Chandigarh by 6 am, be off the high stretch before dark when it refreezes, and book 2 to 3 days so the drive back isn't rushed.
Morni Hills back roads (about 45 km)
Farm stays and viewpoints around Morni are often reached by gravel or broken tracks that turn to mud after rain. A single day is ample. Keep speeds low on loose surfaces and get out and look at any stretch you're unsure of.
Dharamshala in the monsoon (about 240 km)
Rain brings landslide repairs and muddy diversions on Himachal roads. Four-wheel drive gives grip on those patches, but it can't open a closed road, so check road status the night before. Three days covers the round trip of about 480 km.
Driving the Toyota Fortuner 4x4 AT: What to Expect
Around the Tricity it drives like any Fortuner: tall, wide, easy in traffic thanks to the automatic, and in need of a big parking bay. On normal tarmac you leave it in two-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive is for low-grip surfaces such as snow, slush, wet mud and loose gravel, and you should switch into it at low speed before you reach the bad patch, not halfway up a slope with the wheels already spinning. If you haven't used a 4x4 before, ask us to show you the controls at handover.
Its listed figure is about 12 km/l, and snow, low-speed crawling and long climbs pull that down further, so top up in Manali before heading for Solang. A full load of seven leaves room for little more than daypacks at the back; as five, fold the last row and there's space for winter jackets and boots. The diesel has strong pulling power on steep hairpins, which matters with a full car.

Toyota Fortuner 4x4 AT Rental FAQs
The Toyota Fortuner 4x4 AT is ₹8,000 per day on self drive, with 200 km included each day. Weekly rent is ₹48,000. Monthly rent is ₹1,92,000. Extra kilometres are ₹10–15 per km, fuel is not included, and a refundable security deposit of ₹24,000 is taken before handover.
When the surface under the tyres is the problem. Snow and ice at Solang, Kufri or Narkanda, slush after rain, and gravel tracks to farm stays are where four-wheel drive gives you grip. On tarred highways and summer hill roads, four-wheel drive gains you nothing, and the regular Fortuner AT uses a little less diesel.
You can if you go slowly and start early. Drive in daylight, keep long gaps, avoid sudden steering or braking, and follow what local police say about how far vehicles may go. If they advise turning back, turn back. If snow driving makes you nervous, park below the snow line and walk up to it.
Mechanically they are almost the same: both are seven-seat automatics with the 2.8-litre diesel and four-wheel drive. The Legender 4x4 adds the Legender's styling inside and out, which counts for a winter wedding or guests you want to impress. For a family snow trip where nobody is judging the car, the Fortuner 4x4 AT does exactly the same work.
A little. We list the 4x4 at about 12 km/l against about 14 for the regular Fortuner AT, and snow or steep climbs cut into that. For a winter Manali trip of 650 to 700 km including Solang, budget roughly 55 to 60 litres, and keep the tank above half once you're past Kullu.
On rough mountain roads, gravel tracks and muddy village lanes, yes; that's what it's for. Racing and competitive events of any kind are off limits, and insurance won't cover damage caused by misuse, so treat river crossings and rocky stretches with real caution. If a track looks doubtful, it's fine to turn around.
A valid driving licence held for at least one year, plus government photo identification such as Aadhaar or a passport. Both must be produced in original at handover. International visitors need a passport and an international driving permit.
